JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Position:  Phlebotomist                                                   Classification:  Full Time/Hourly

JOB SUMMARY:      Draws blood from patients and checks quality of blood.  Processes and accessions all

                                      specimens in accordance with appropriate lab’s requirements.  Certain waived testing may be

                                      performed as well as clerical duties such as recording of results and distribution of results and

                                      charts to ordering physicians.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.                    Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products.

2.                    Checks careslip to ensure all codes are marked.

3.                    Prints labels for appropriate test tubes as well as completes label with draw time on the careslip and places label in accession log under current date and appropriate physician.

4.                    Conducts designated laboratory testing and processes all specimens according to standards.

5.                    Assists in the care of donor prior to, during and after collection.

6.                    Instructs patients on urine collection procedures and allocates specimen.

7.                    Completes proper requisitions for send-outs to reference laboratories and maintains laboratory flow sheets.

8.                    Prepares specimens for scheduled courier pick-up and for the lock box collections after hours.

9.                    Inventories and stocks appropriate safety phlebotomy supplies.

10.                 Maintains temperature log of refrigerator

11.                 Performs chemical dipsticks on urine specimens and records results on QC log.

12.                 Test hemoccult cards and records dates on logsheet.

13.                 Performs any waived kit tests such as pregnancy tests.

14.                 Files copies of all lab results and answers telephone as needed.

15.                 Faxes add-on test sheets to the testing lab

16.                 Cleans equipment and work area in accordance with the Exposure Control Plan (ECP).

17.                 Uses Personal Protective Equipment whenever there is a possibility of contact with blood or other

                potentially infectious materials or when touching items or surfaces that could be contaminated.

18.                 Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.             High school diploma or equivalent, and one year phlebotomy experience with certification.

2.                    Knowledge of laboratory techniques/equipment to perform blood and urine tests.

3.                    Effective communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.

4.                    Ability to work as a team member and demonstrate a customer service attitude.

5.                    Ability to interpret written instructions in a manual or compendium.

6.                    Understanding of the special needs of ill or elderly patients.

 

INTERACTIONS/ WORKING CONDITIONS:

All levels of employees at the site and at the corporate level.  General public and heavy patient contact. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires full range of body motion including manual finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.  Frequent standing and walking for extended periods of time.  Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.  Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
