Position: Patient Account Specialist Classification: Full Time/Hourly
Reports To: Manager of Payments and Collections Location: Central Business Office
JOB SUMMARY: Processes unpaid accounts by contacting patients and third party reimbursement vendors. Assigns uncollectible accounts to a collection agency or attorney and follows up. Provides other support in the department as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Reviews accounts via computer, reports, and other information sources to determine delinquent accounts by aging period and payment source.
2. Performs collection actions including contacting patients by telephone or mail. Resubmits claims to third party administrators as needed.
3. Reviews patient accounts and refers to collection agencies or attorneys as needed with the approval of the supervisor.
4. Evaluates patient financial status and establishes budget payment plans.
5. Follows and reports status of delinquent accounts.
6. Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints.
7. May do insurance follow-up as needed.
8. Participates in team meetings.
9. Performs related work duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Minimum of two years previous medical billing and collections experience.
2. General office skills and computer knowledge.
3. Knowledge of medical terminology and an understanding of insurance claims process, working knowledge of managed care, HMO and PPO benefits and concepts.
4. Effective communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.
5. Ability to work as a team member and demonstrate a customer service attitude.
INTERACTIONS/ WORKING CONDITIONS:
All levels of employees at the site and at the corporate level. Heavy patient contact. Normal office environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stretching, and lightweight lifting. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate verbal and written reports. Ability to manage time and stress efficiently.
